Summary

 

Job Summary

This position guards and patrols assigned Bates Technical College premises to protect property, staff and students, and maintains a secure campus environment. The incumbent may be required to work irregular hours and weekends on occasion.

 

Essential Duties

 
  • Patrols building and parking lot premises by walking, standing, and driving a motor vehicle; assists in monitoring hallways, grounds and other assigned campus and adjacent areas; reports security concerns and problems to the first-line supervisor.
  • Investigates theft, property damage, vandalism, assaults, trespassing and other related disturbances on college property.
  • Rapidly responds to emergencies and other security concerns and may need to use force; reports on and detains unauthorized persons in accordance with established college procedures; contacts police or fire department when necessary.
  • Initiates police and/or investigative reports; gathers data on misdemeanors and prepares related documentation; refers cases to appropriate authorities as directed.
  • Assists in maintaining a positive liaison with students, staff, and community; promotes prescribed standards of conduct and behavior.
  • Assists and advises staff, students, and visitors in proper safety procedures; enforces college security policies.
  • Transport items to campus locations as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Special Conditions

  • A collective bargaining agreement exists and membership in the Bates Technical College Operating Engineers, Local 286, or payment of a representation fee is required.
  • Possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Take and pass the Taser Qualification Course annually.
  • Pass a Washington State Patrol background and criminal history check.
  • Must obtain and maintain a first aid card within 30 days of employment. 
  • Wear assigned uniform and protective clothing or devices, as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree
  • Five years police, security, or military experience.
 
Allowable Substitution
If necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by the Human Resources Unit for comparability.          
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Safety/Security experience in a college environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed both in an office environment and on and around Bates Technical College campuses.
 
Mental/Physical Demands
  • Ability to maintain a degree of fitness that allows participation in stressful, physically demanding, and/or confrontational situations.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and requires the ability to sit in and drive a campus public safety motor vehicle.
  • Acute hearing, smell and eyesight are required when working with urgent situations.
  • Fast and immediate response is necessary to protect people from potential harm.
  • Sustained attention is required to respond quickly to constant demands and remain vigilant and attentive. Lack of attention could result in accidents, injury, or a loss of life.
  • Must control own emotions, demonstrate appropriate sensitivity and calmness, and maintain professionalism when dealing with a person who is, hurt, upset, tired or frustrated.  
  • Bending, lifting, kneeling, standing, stretching, pushing, pulling may be required throughout the day, depending on the security needs.

BENEFITS

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Classified employees are represented by a collective bargaining unit. All represented employees must become members or pay the agency fee, the non-association fee, or the representation fee within 30 calendar days of hire.

For full-time Childcare and ECEAP positions, the salary will be prorated to reflect the actual number of contract days worked in the remainder of the fiscal year. Childcare and ECEAP positions are not part of the classified staff collective bargaining unit.

All offers of employment will be contingent upon the prospective candidate completing a criminal history check to the satisfaction of the college.
